The National Board of Revenue (NBR) collected Tk 29.97 crore through electronic fiscal devices (EFDs) in September, witnessing around 20 per cent fall compared to August.
The revenue authorities in August bagged Tk 37.61 crore in value added tax (VAT) on EFDs installed in various retail outlets in Dhaka and Chattogram.
In total, the revenue collection through EFD and Sales Data Controller (SDC) was Tk 32.24 crore in September.
The NBR revealed the EFD revenue earnings at the EFDMS (Electronic Fiscal Device Management System) lottery programme held at the conference room of the NBR headquarters in the capital on Wednesday.
NBR officials said five commissionerates of VAT in Dhaka (Dhaka North, South, West, East), and Chattogram collect revenues through 7,832 EFDs and SDCs installed till September 30.

At the programme, NBR member (VAT Implementation and IT) Moinul Khan said, “The popularity of EFD machines is gradually increasing. Even, August witnessed a huge growth in invoicing and revenue collection.”
He added, “We believe that radical changes have come in this sector. When the new three lakh EFDs are installed, the long-term success will come through these devices.”
Moinul, however, stressed the importance of increasing awareness among customers and traders in achieving huge positive growth in revenue collection.
On the day, the NBR held a draw of its 21st lottery of the EFD-generated invoices against purchases made by consumers throughout September.
On the occasion, the authorities announced a challan number of a consumer as the first prize winner who got Tk 1 lakh. The second prize winner got Tk 50,000.
Five consumers won the third prize worth Tk 25,000 each while 94 others won the fourth prize worth Tk 10,000 each.
Every month the NBR holds a lottery draw based on the previous month's challans.
To curb VAT evasion, create accountability in VAT collection, and increase transparency in the system, NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem inaugurated the EFDMS on August 25, 2019.
On February 5, 2020, the revenue board started the lottery system for the first time to motivate customers to provide VAT through EFD machines.
