Facebook users worldwide mysteriously received a slash in the follower base of their personal accounts and pages. The Facebook authority did not provide any statement immediately regarding the reasons behind the drops.
Earlier this week, the sudden drops in Facebook follower counts of several of the USA's largest media outlets on Monday and Tuesday led to rumours that the social media giant might be deleting fake or bot accounts.
Several users of Meta’s Facebook on Wednesday complained about losing the majority of their followers on the social media platform.
Even Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg lost over 119 million followers which have brought down his follower count to below 10,000.
However, Zuckerberg's followers regained and reached 119,185,040 or over 119 million and no updated statement was made by the social media platform till filing this report around 6pm on Wednesday.
“Facebook created a tsunami that wiped away my almost 9,00,000 followers and left only 9,000 something on the shore. I kind of like Facebook’s comedy”, exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen tweeted.
Bangladeshi film director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki said in a comment on his status on Wednesday said the number of his Facebook followers has dropped drastically to 7 lakhs.
Meta spokesperson told the media: “We’re aware that some people are seeing inconsistent follower count on their Facebook profiles. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience."
