Robi launches eSIM

Robi Axiata Ltd – the country’s second-largest telecom operator – has launched eSIM facility for its customers.

Making the announcement on its website, Robi added that the clients would be able to enjoy digital services without the need for a physical SIM card thanks to the smart solution.

After Grameenphone and Banglalink, Robi is the third operator that launched the eSIM facility in the country.

In the last decade, technology has advanced at an exponential rate. We are in the middle of a digital revolution, made possible by wireless devices and the spread of intelligent devices into every part of our lives, according to the mobile phone company.

In response to this industry-wide shift, Robi Axiata is proud to announce the launch of its cutting-edge eSIM technology in Bangladesh regarding accessing mobile networks; the eSIM ushers in a new era of ease & flexibility.

On March 7, 2022, Grameenphone for the first time launched the eSIM facility.

However, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) withheld the launching of Grameenphone eSIM, citing concerns over a lack of clarity centring revenue collection from the issuance of the new type of SIMs.

In April 2022, the BTRC cleared the way for mobile phone operators to introduce eSIM services, allowing customers to use digital SIM cards. After Grameenphone, Banglalink launched eSIM in December last year.

Embedded SIM (eSIM) is a form of SIM card that is directly embedded into a device, removing the need for a traditional SIM card. It works just like a regular SIM and only works on devices with pre-installed eSIM support.
