Mobile internet subscribers will receive their unused data added to the next data pack, provided they renew the same package even with a different validity.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has formulated a fresh guideline on this. At present, unused data is not carried forward when its validity expires.

The regulatory body announced the guideline at an event at its office in the capital on Tuesday, removing the existing time constraints on mobile data usage set by the mobile phone companies.

According to the new guideline, if users purchase the same package even with a different validity, the unused data will be carried forward.

For example, if a three-day package expires and a user purchases the same one with a 30-day validity, the data will be usable for the whole period.

Moreover, mobile operators will distribute three types of data packages – regular, special, and research and development.

The BTRC said last year telecom companies would have to transfer the unused internet data to the next package if it was bought before the expiry of the existing one, and this would be effective from March 1, 2022.

It also said the facility would have to be applied to all types of internet bundles offered by the mobile phone operators.

The BTRC says the number of mobile internet users is declining. There were 11.37 crore users in December 2021, down from 11.65 crore in the previous month.

The figure was 11.91 crore in October 2021 and has been decreasing since then. The number of broadband internet users stood at 1.9 crore in December 2021.
