10 entities to be awarded for textile sector contribution

The government will award 10 entities for contributing to the development of the textile sector of the country, on the occasion of The National Textiles Day-2022, Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said on Sunday.

“The entities would be awarded for their role in achieving excellence, expanding education, and increasing exports of the sector,” the minister said at a press conference held at the Secretariat.

Golam Dastagir Gazi said the 10 entities will be honoured for their contribution to the textile sector at the main programme of National Textile Day, which is set to be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on January 12.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the event as the chief guest.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, State Minister of Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian, and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Textiles and Jute President Mirza Azam will be present as special guests.

Emphasising the role of the textile sector in the economy, Golam Dastagir Gazi said, “Majority of the country’s export income comes from the textile sector. This rapidly expanding industry is contributing greatly to the socioeconomic development of the country.

“At present, nearly half a million people are working in the textile sector. About 80 per cent of them are women. As a result, it plays an important role in the development and empowerment of women,” he added.

The entities to be awarded are- the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), Bangladesh Specialized Textile Mills and Powerloom Industries Association (BSTMPIA), Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA), Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA), Bangladesh Terry Towel & Linen Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BTTLMEA), Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX), Bangladesh Garments Accessories & Packaging Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGAPMEA), and Bangladesh Tanti Samity.
