Bangladesh’s Green Textile Ltd Unit-4 is now the world’s most environment-friendly factory, as it achieved the highest grade in LEED certification.

The factory - categorised as platinum - achieved 104 points out of 110, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Speaking to The Business Post, BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel said, "It is a great achievement for Bangladesh. It is a miracle to achieve 104 points out of 110. We are committed to reducing carbon emissions and securing the workplace environment.

"Our green initiatives have proved that the Bangladesh RMG industry is much safer than others. We expect that considering our initiatives, the buyers will pay fair prices to our manufacturers."

Established in 2010, Green Textile is a joint venture ready-made garments (RMG) factory owned by EPIC Group and Envoy Legacy, Managing Director Tanvir Ahmed said.

According to the BGMEA, the top 51 green factories, among a total of 100 in the world, are now in Bangladesh, and the country also has 190 LEED-certified factories.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.

Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.
