Apparel workers blocked the roads in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Saturday, demanding wage hike as inflation has made life harder.

Hundreds of workers from different garment factories took to the streets at Mirpur-13 around 11:00am and continued their demonstrations until around 2:30pm.

The hours-long demonstrations caused severe traffic congestion at Mirpur-10 intersection, suffering commuters heavily.

The ready-made garment workers also protested the price hike of daily commodities.

Seeking anonymity, a worker said, “The prices of essential commodities have gone high. It will be impossible to maintain daily life and to meet hunger if the owners do not increase their wages.”

At present, he said, the value of taka has gone down. “No one is taking the issue into consideration.”

Kafrul police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman told The Business Post that the workers vandalised vehicles during the demonstrations.

Police brought the situation under control and traffic movement returned to normalcy, he added.
