Bangladesh to import 50,000 tonnes of Indian boiled rice via railway

In the face of depleting stock of staple food rice in the government warehouses and silos, Bangladesh for the first time has decided to import boiled rice from India via railway.

The government Wednesday at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and Purchase with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair decided to import 50,000 tonnes of boiled rice from India.

The rice will cost approximately Tk 32.73 per kg.

Shahida Akhter, additional secretary of the Cabinet Division disclosed the information, adding that this will be the first time the rice will be imported via railway.

“We have taken a decision to import boiled rice at the earliest possible time from India's Kolkata through railway which is first of its kind. The rice will cost Tk 32.73 per kg,” Shahida told The Business Post.

India’s Saurav Industries Ltd will supply the rice at Tk USD 386 per tonne, she said.
