Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association on Monday sought support of the Bangladesh Bank to overcome the challenges the apparel sector is facing amid the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.
A BGMEA delegation led by its president Faruque Hassan met Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir at his office on the day and made the call, said a press release.
Ahmed Jamal and Kazi Sayedur Rahman, deputy governors of the Bangladesh Bank, were also present at the meeting.
“RMG industry is facing a tough time for the unprecedented crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic. RMG entrepreneurs are struggling to keep the wheels of economy moving. If the Bangladesh Bank takes initiative to ease the issues related to RMG, it will be more helpful for a rebound,” said Faruque Hasan.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Bank extended loan limit for garment and textile factories from the export development fund to $30 million from $25 million.
Faruque called for extending the time limit for the enhanced EDF by six months.
He also requested the central bank to write off all debts, interest, and cost of fund charges for 133 sick RMG factories, taking them into special consideration.
The BGMEA delegation also included Senior Vice President SM Mannan (Kochi), Vice President Md Shahidullah Azim, Vice President (Finance) Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, and Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury.
