Thousands of bidi workers on Saturday went out on demonstrations on the occasion of May Day in Dhaka, Kushtia, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Barisal, and Patuakhali and some other places.
They carried various placards and posters reading their demands including ensuring survival of the bidi industry to ensure the livelihood of millions of workers and their families.
The Bidi Sramik Federation president MK Bangali presided over the central rally held in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, while federation executive member Anwar Hossain moderated the function.
The leaders asked the workers to be united to press home their demand by taking the lesson from the history of the Labour Day.
The leaders discussed the miserable condition of bidi workers as factories are being closed day by day at the conspiracy of a vested quarter.
The workers vowed to do everything required to meet their demands.
