Broiler chicken, eggs become costlier

The prices of broiler chicken, egg and lentil has increased by Tk 10-15 across Dhaka’s kitchen markets this week.

Traders say that price of broiler chicken, eggs and lentils went up compared to the last week price due to low supply.

On the other hand, they said the price of the commodities also rose as most of the restaurants, hotels, and marriage ceremonies have resumed functioning following the withdrawal of pandemic-induced lockdowns.

Visiting different kitchen markets in the citys on Friday, The Business Post found that broiler chicken was being sold at Tk 135 to 145 per kg, up from Tk 125-135 per kg last week.

Meanwhile, a dozen of eggs were being sold at Tk 110-115 on Friday, up from Tk 100 last week.

Anwar, who sells broiler chickens at Sukhrabad Kitchen Market, said price had gone up in line with the wholesale markets.

Another essential lentil was being sold at Tk 120 per kg on Friday, up from Tk 110 per kg last week.

Md Kamrul Islam, owner of Bhanu Oil Store at Mohakhali Kitchen Market, told The Business Post that lentil prices have gone up in both wholesale and retail markets due to a hike in price by mill owners.

According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data, lentil was being sold at Tk 55 per kg on Friday in the city’s kitchen markets.

Meanwhile, prices of vegetables, fishes and other essentials remained stable on Friday at the kitchen markets compared to last week price.

Bean was being sold at a higher price at Tk 140 - Tk 150 per kg, Tomato at Tk 80 - Tk 100 per kg, and green chilies at Tk 100 – 120 per kg.

Vegetable vendor Mohammed Karim Munshi at Hatirpool said as the production of vegetables fell during the monsoon season, the price of vegetables remains a bit high over the last two weeks.

In the retail rice market, Miniket was being sold between Tk 60-65 per kg, Sorna between Tk 45-47 per kg, Paijam between Tk 46-50 per kg, Basmati between Tk 65-70 per kg, BR-28 and BR-29 sold between Tk 50—55 per kg and Nazirshail between Tk 62-65 per kg.

However, price of different kinds of fishes remained unchanged on Friday.
