Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Thursday said the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) would be transformed into an international standard institution through laboratory expansion.

The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion on “Shared Vision for a better world-Standard for SDGs” at the BSTI headquarters in the capital, said a press release.

The discussion was organised to mark the World Standards Day.

Highlighting the importance of the BSTI in export trade, the minister said steps should be taken to increase the production and export of quality products as per the demand of the international market.

“In order to compete in a free market economy, there is no alternative to producing international standard quality products and for its implementation, BSTI has to be developed as an international standard institution. If necessary, a special project can be undertaken for the purpose,” he said.

Urging the traders to produce quality products, the minister said one of the preconditions for industrialisation is to create demand in the domestic market through producing quality products and increasing the acceptance of domestic products in the international market.

Industries Secretary Zakia Sultana and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Md Jashim Uddin attended the discussion as special guests while BSTI Director General Md Nazrul Anwar presided over it.
