For the first time vegetables of Dumuria in Khulna are now being exported to European markets, bringing a smile to the faces of local farmers.
The safe and fresh vegetables of Dumuria upazila are being primarily exported to England and Italy by two companies.
When asked, Dumuria upazila agriculture officer Md Mosaddek Hossain told The Business Post that they were planning to send 120 tonnes of vegetables to the European zone. They sent one tonne of pointed gourd, green banana, taro shoots to Italy Friday. Later, the export list of vegetables is added with Palwal, bottle guard, ash gourd, papaya, ribbed gourd and sponge gourd. These vegetables from Khulna are safe and organic, he added.
He also said, “We must ensure the quality of the vegetables and for this, we have taken different initiatives. We have arranged different training programmes for the farmers at the grassroots. Here, our farmers are being trained under the Sustainable Agriculture Food Securities and Linkages (SOFOL). This project helps the farmers from Khulna and Jashore area to cultivate quality vegetables. Over eleven thousand farmers have taken training from the organisations.”
He further said that primarily their vegetables are being sent to Italy and England but later their vegetables will be exported to other European countries. These vegetables are sent by two institutions named NHB Corporation and RR Enterprise. NHB Corporation sends vegetables to Italy while RR Enterprise exports to England.
