e-Cab opposes source tax measure

E–Commerce Association of Bangladesh strongly opposed bringing of e-commerce service providers under source tax umbrella apprehending that it might disrupt the growth of this sector.

Shomi Kaiser, President, of e–Commerce Association of Bangladesh, raised her opposition while speaking at a post-budget seminar of the Business Promotion Council and e-Cab on Monday, said a press release.

She, however, lauded the proposal of tax exemption for Information Technology Enabled Services at the national budget for the next fiscal year.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed his Tk 6,03,681 crore proposed budget for 2021-22 fiscal year, before parliament on Thursday.

Shomi also said that most of the entrepreneurs in the sector are still new and that they need time to cope up with the business environment first and source tax will hinder the entire process.

Speaking as the chief guest, Md Abdur Rahim Khan, joint secretary at the commerce ministry and coordinator of BPC, said that the council would extend its cooperation to e-commerce entrepreneurs so that their demands were reflected in the next fiscal budget.  

Speaking as the special guest, Sirajun Noor Chowdhury, joint secretary at finance ministry, said that decisions must be taken cautiously so that the budgetary decisions were implemented accordingly. He said that entrepreneurs can sit in a dialogue with the National Board of Revenue and the finance ministry if needed to solve problems arising in the sector.
