Evaly asks staff to work from home

Controversial e-commerce platform Evaly on Saturday asked its employees to work from home until further notice.

“Considering the present situation,” the company came up with the fresh instruction on its Facebook page just a day after the top two bosses of the e-commerce outlet were taken into police custody for interrogation.

A court in Dhaka on Friday afternoon placed Evaly Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, the company’s chairman, on three-day remand each in a case of embezzling customers’ money through fraud.

Gulshan police said they took Rassel to hospital at night as he felt unwell in their custody.

After the medical check-up at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital, he was brought back to the police station.

Rapid Action Battalion apprehended Rassel and Shamima from their Mohammadpur residence on Thursday after a customer filed the fraud case against the couple with Gulshan police station that morning.

The Evaly CEO planned to declare bankruptcy if he failed to sell the company to an international or a big domestic organisation with liabilities, according to RAB.

During initial questioning, Rassel and Shamima said the company’s total debt stood at over Tk 1,000 crore, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin told the media on Friday.

“Evaly has been a loss-making company since its inception. All expenses were met with customers’ money, leading to debt accumulation,” he said.

After the briefing, the battalion handed over the couple to police.
