Sammilito Parishad, led by Giant Group managing director Faruque Hassan, won the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association biennial elections for 2021-23, bagging 24 directorship posts out of 35.
Under Sammilito Parishad and Forum, a total of 70 candidates took part in the elections held on Sunday in Dhaka and Chattogram.
Election officials said that a total of 1,996 BGMEA members exercised their voting rights out of 2,314 eligible members in the elections.
Of them, 1604 voted in Dhaka and 392 in Chattogram.
Out of 35 directors, Sammilito Parishad bagged 24, while Forum, led by Hannan Group chairman ABM Shamsuddin, won 11 directorship posts.
Syed Ferhat Anwar, chairman of the election board, announced the result of the polls.
Faruque Hassan bagged 1204, the highest votes, while incumbent BGMEA president Rubana Huq got 1157 votes.
Forum panel leader Shamsuddin failed to win the director post as he bagged 904 votes.
Two panels - Sammilita Parishad and Forum, led by Faruque and Shamsuddin respectively, took part in the elections.
As per the existing electoral system of the trade body a president, a first vice-president, senior vice-president and five vice-presidents will be elected from victorious directors. The first vice-president will be elected from the Chattogram zone.
Usually, the panel leader is elected as president and in line with that Faruque Hassan is set to become the president of BGMEA.
