FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said on Thursday, the trade body would implore the commerce ministry for authorizing the import of meat, chicken, and eggs for the next few months upon the failure of curbing the price hike.

“If beef in Dubai can be sold for Tk 500 a kilogram, we must work out as to why it is sold for Tk 700 here (Dhaka),” said Md Jashim Uddin in a view exchange meeting at the FBCCI auditorium in Dhaka.

He is content with the prices of most groceries being affordable including sugar and lentil as the stock is plenty. But he is concerned by the soaring prices of beef and chicken.

He said he is aware of the trade-off surrounding the import of meat which hurts local production. But tough calls must be made despite the risk.

The echelon calls upon the traders to stay honest and true in pricing the groceries especially when the mobile court is on the lookout for preventing such misdemeanours.
