This season, jute farmers are getting a reasonable price for their produce. Farmers are selling a maund (37.32kg) of raw jute for Tk 2,300 and Tk 2,500. Traders sell a maund of jute for Tk 2,700 to Tk 3,400 at the mill gates.
Hundreds of wholesalers from different parts of the country visit Munshiganj’s Dighipar jute market every Monday and Friday. Traders say they sell 5,000 to 7,000 maunds of jute on each market day. An estimated 500 to 600 workers also find temporary employment at the market.
Farmers say seasonal traders have purchased a higher quantity of jute this season. Three types of jute — Shuti, Tosha, and Meshta —sell for between Tk 2,500 and Tk 3,000 a maund based on quality.
In FY20-21, Bangladesh exported jute and jute goods worth $1.16 billion, up by 31 per cent compared to the previous year.
