The prices of medium-sized cows have gone up in the cattle markets of Dhaka as their demand has increased among buyers with Eid-ul-Azha just hours away.

Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest festivals for Muslims, is going to be celebrated on Sunday across the country.

While the cattle markets are bustling with a stream of potential buyers, traders have opted to seize the opportunity to get their desired prices.

Customers said cattle traders wanted much higher prices of the medium-sized cows, which already exceeded their budget.

Traders said the prices of medium-sized cows increased due to the supply shortage and high demand.

Hasibur Rahman, who came to Shahjahanpur cattle market on Saturday morning, expressed frustration as he could not buy any medium-sized cow with his budget of Tk 70,000.

Another buyer Ashfiqur Rahman said the cow which was priced Tk 70,000-80,000 last year is now more than Tk 1 lakh.

He said there is a shortage of cows in the cattle markets now and that’s why the traders are not reducing the prices during the bargaining.

“I will come at night again to buy a cow,” Ashfiqur added.

Atiqur Rahman, an employee of a private company, said he came to Kamalapur cattle market in the afternoon with a budget of Tk 70,000.

“At last, I had to buy a mid-sized cow for Tk 78,000 which was Tk 65,000 last year.”

Abdul Kuddus, a representative of Shahjahanpur cattle market lessee, told The Business Post that there is a crisis of cows in the market.

“Due to the traffic congestion, the trucks carrying cows cannot reach the markets in time.”

He hoped more cows will arrive in the market in the evening and there will be no shortage of the sacrificial animals.

There are 22 cattle markets, including in Gabtoli and Sarulia, in areas under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) this year. Of them, 12 are under DSCC and 10 are under DNCC.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed urged the cattle traders to take assistance from the law enforcers for transportation of cash.

He told this while talking to reporters after visiting the Kamalapur cattle market.
