French study suggests hydroxychloroquine is ineffective in treating COVID-19 patients

Hydroxychloroquine,  the antimalarial drug whis was called "the game changer" by the US President Donald Trump has not been proven successful to treat patients, rather it created heart complications in some cases, stated a French study.

Dr Paul Offit, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s hospital of Philadelphia said that, " This proves that apparently hydroxychloroquine  does not treat patients with COVID-19. " He also added that there are severe side effects of this drug, as the intake of it can cause heart toxicities.

In different times,Trump said that this drug has shown "tremendous promise" and made it sound like it does not have any side effects.

Offit said,"People can claim whatever they want but the prove is in the pudding, and this is the pudding. "

In the French study, doctors have analysed te record of 181 patients suffering from COVID-19. Half of thewere given the drug with 48 hours of them getting into the hospital  and the other half were not.

The doctors found out that there was no significant differences in the number of  deaths and patients getting into the ICU.

Moreover,8 patients who took the  drug developed abnormal heart rythms and had to stop taking it.

2.8 % of patients who took the drug dried and 4.6% patients who did not take it died. This minor difference has been marked as statistically insignificant by the researchers.

The study was published tuesday on medRxiv. org, a pre-print server founded by Yale University, the journal BMJ and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
