March salary paid to 95pc workers: BGMEA

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has claimed around 95 percent workers of its member factories have received salaries for the month of March.

A BGMEA official said a total of 24,72,417 people are currently working in the member factories.

Of them, 23,41,000 received salaries for March -- it is 94.68 percent of the total workforce.

The remaining workers will get their salaries soon, he said.

The organization has 2,274 member factories; out of the total, 2,056 factories have so far paid their workers, according to BGMEA.

Most of the workers were supposed to receive their salaries by April 16 in the ongoing lockdown caused by coronavirus pandemic. But all the factory owners could not pay within the deadline.
