6-month-old 'miracle baby' defeats coronavirus

A six-month-old with a heart and lung condition has successfully defeated Covid-19 after spending two weeks in an isolation unit. She has been dubbed a 'miracle baby' in the social media.

Erin Bates was born with a number of medical conditions and even had to undergo open heart surgery in December last, just two months after her birth. Then she contracted a respiratory virus in January, and suffered from both tracheomalacia and bronchomalacia which affected her windpipe and lungs.

In April, she was diagnosed with coronavirus and taken to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool.

Heartbreaking photos of the little girl, shared by her family in the social media, showed her hooked to an oxygen machine and surrounded by tubes while admitted to the hospital.

Despite having so many serious health conditions, on Sunday, the infant recovered from coronavirus and was discharged from the hospital.

A moving video has revealed the moment she was taken out of isolation after beating Covid-19 on April 24. In that video, hospital staff was filmed applauding Erin as her cot was wheeled out of the hospital's high dependency unit.

"Today, little Erin beat COVID-19 after testing negative and received a guard of honour by the treating team on our HDU as she was moved out of isolation ," Alder Hey Hospital wrote sharing the video clip on Facebook.

Quoting Erin's father Wayne, Daily Mail said she has made a full recovery and is "all smiles".

"Erin has beaten the virus. It hit her hard with a few ups and downs but we wanted people to know coronavirus doesn't have to be a death sentence for people with pre-existing conditions," Wayne said.
