Employees of different shops at the capital’s Gausia market staged a demonstration and blocked Mirpur Road for more than an hour on Sunday demanding their arrears.

The employees took to the streets in front of the market at 12:00 noon and continued the demonstration until 1:30pm.

Jewel Molla, president of Shramik Kormochari Union of Gausia market unit, said almost all the shop owners at the market did not pay their arrears and kept the market shut.

“If the owners don’t pay us due salaries and allowances for the last two months, how will we survive during this coronavirus pandemic?” he questioned.

Urging the shop owners to settle the issue as early as possible, Jewel alleged that some shop owners decided to keep the market shut only to deprive employees of their benefits.

Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, said considering the present coronavirus situation most of the shopping malls and markets will remain shut so that this deadly virus do not spread further.

Earlier on May 4, the government allowed business people to keep shops and shopping malls open for six hours from 10:00am to 4:00pm every day from May 10, after maintaining health guidelines.
