Cyclone Amphan: 72 dead in West Bengal

72 people have died in West Bengal because of Cyclone Amphan, the Chief Minister of the Indian state Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday (May 21) after the powerful storm wrecked cities including Kolkata on Wednesday (May 20), destroying thousands of homes and uprooting trees and electric poles.

Mamata Banerjee said the damage caused by Amphan is more than the coronavirus pandemic and has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the affected districts and provide help to "rebuild those areas from scratch".

Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 Lakh to the families of those who died due to Cyclone Amphan.
