Saudi Arabia to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr Sunday
Eid Al-Fitr celebrations will begin in on Sunday May 24, according to authorities in Saudi Arabia.

Due to the absence of the Shawal moon, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday (May 24) as the month of Ramadan will be completed for 30 days in the kingdom today.

The Saudi Royal Court issued a statement, saying it has been decided that Saturday will be the 30th day of Ramadan and Sunday will be the first day of Shawal and Eid-ul-Fitr.

The UAE, Iraq, Qatar and Jordan also came up with the same announcement.

Besides, Turkey, Indonesia and Australia will celebrate Eid on Sunday as the Shawal moon was not sighted there on Friday night, according to various media reports.

This year though, the situation is different as the Saudi authorities placed a lockdown from May 23 to 27 to limit the transmission of coronavirus. Saudi Arabia has so far confirmed more than 67,000 coronavirus cases, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Eid is celebrated based on the sighting of the moon.

In Bangladesh, the National Moon Sighting Committee is scheduled to meet on Saturday evening to decide the date of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on the same day in Saudi Arabia as well as several other countries.

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, some countries, including the United Arab Emirates, have said that there will be no Eid Jamaat this time while some countries have instructed to perform Eid prayers while maintaining social distance in a very limited presence.
