Decision to reopen stock markets likely on Thursday

The decision to restart trading in the stock markets may come on Thursday (May 28), according to the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).

The first commission meeting under the new BSEC leadership will be held on Thursday and may decide on a date to restart trading in the stock markets, sources said.

Trading in the country's capital markets has been stalled for more than two months due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) has been repeatedly asking for the resumption of trading, but the outgoing BSEC chairman and two commissioners could not reach a decision.

However, on May 17, Professor Shibli Rubaiyat-ul Islam was appointed as the new chairman of BSEC.

After taking charge, the new chairman said the stock market will start trading from the beginning of June.

On May 20, Professor Dr Sheikh Shamsuddin Ahmed and Professor Mizanur Rahman were appointed as commissioners at BSEC.

The commission meeting on Thursday will be their first such meeting.
