India records highest number of coronavirus cases in 24hrs
India: Covid-19 cases count crossed 1.6 lakh on Thursday

India on Friday reported the highest number of new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, according to Indian Health Ministry data.

This is the first time that 7,466 Covid-19 cases have been detected in a 24-hour period in India and follows seven straight days of more than 6,000 new cases per day.

The number of deaths over the past 24 hours is 175. The total number of Covid-19 cases is now 1, 65,799, the total number of deaths is 4,706 and the number of people who have recovered is 71,106. Late Thursday the country crossed 1.6 lakh coronavirus cases, making it the ninth worst-hit in the world, according to the data from the Johns Hopkins University.

The surge in cases comes with only two days to the end of the fourth phase of the lockdown.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country with nearly 60,000 cases and 1,982 deaths so far. State capital Mumbai, regarded as the financial capital of India, is the worst-affected metro with over 35,000 confirmed cases.

Lockdown relaxation measures are expected to be announced over the next few days, but these are unlikely to include Mumbai, where 1,467 new cases and 38 deaths were reported on Thursday.
