Prioritise local industries, say business leaders

Business leaders have demanded that priority be given to local industries in order to salvage the economy from the fallout of coronavirus.

The demand was placed at a virtual seminar organized by the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) on Sunday (June 7).

FBCCI organized the seminar on Bangladesh's economic sustainability, recovery, internal investment and FDI in the Covid-19 situation. Economists, businessmen and other stakeholders took part in the event conducted by the president of the organization Sheikh Fazle Fahim.

Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Saleh Uddin Ahmed at the seminar said the banking sector of the country is going through a crisis. The slowdown in private sector debt growth is unfortunate, he opined. However, there is no alternative to increasing private debt to increase employment in the future, he added.

Former FBCCI president A K Azad at the event said foreign investment must be increased in order to deal with financial losses. Besides the country must work on skill development of workers, he opined.
