Md Rayhan Kabir, the Bangladeshi man featured in Al-Jazeera's controversial documentary has had his work permit revoked by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, Inspector General (IG) of Malaysian Police, confirmed the matter, report local news outlet Harian Metro.

Regarding Rayhan and the documentary titled 'Locked Up in Malaysia's Lockdown' in Al-Jazeera's 101 East segment, Abdul Hamid Bador was quoted saying, "Therefore, he (Rayhan Kabir) must surrender to the authorities before being deported back to his home country."

Earlier on July 6, 2020, another local media Bernama reported that the Malaysian Director-General of Immigration, Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said any foreigners who make damaging statements about Malaysia may risk having their passes revoked.

"The Immigration Department strongly warns all foreigners especially the long-term pass holders such as Student Pass, Temporary Employment Pass, Residence Pass and others to be careful when making any statement," he said.

It all started from the documentary made by Al-Jazeera about how local authorities are handling the Covid-19 and immigration situation.

Rayhan was one of the people interviewed in the short-documentary in which he spoke up against the authorities for their alleged mistreatment of immigrants.

After the video was released, it received backlash from some quarters of the public and the government, the latter of which launched an investigation on the news outlet.

At the time of writing this report, the video is one of the top trending videos on YouTube with about 1,803,121 views and over 334,000 dislikes

Many within the government of Malaysia, including Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, slammed the video and demanded an apology from the news organisation for the allegedly false reports.

The country's Immigration Department also released Rayhan's personal details to the public to help the government locate him, reports The Rakyat Post.
