Market capital declines despite rise in indices

The stock markets closed with an upward trend in the outgoing week (October 18-October 22), although the trend was opposite in the previous week. The main index of both the stock markets increased during the week along with the amount of transaction.

During the outgoing week, share and unit prices of most of the companies have declined. However, investors lost Taka 4,000 crore in the week in spite of the positive trend in indices and transactions.

It is learnt that during the week, both the stock exchanges incurred losses worth Taka 4 thousand 55 crore 86 lakh 82 thousand. Before the start of trading on the first working day of the week at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the market capitalization was Taka 3 lakh 98 thousand 551 crore 97 lakh 53 thousand. At the end of the last working day of the week, the market capitalization stood at Taka 3 lakh 96 thousand 575 crore 5 lakh 21 thousand. In other words, the market capitalization at the DSE decreased by Taka 1 thousand 976 crore 92 lakh 32 thousand or 0.49 percent.

Before the start of trading on the first working day of the week at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), market capitalization was Taka 3 lakh 29 thousand 401 crore 12 lakh 90 thousand and at the end of the last working day of the week, the market capitalization stood at Taka 3 lakh 27 thousand 322 crore 18 lakh 40 thousand. In other words, the market capitalization at the CSE reduced by Taka 2 thousand 78 crore 94 lakh 50 in the outgoing week.

It is learnt that Taka 4,240 crore 79 lakh 21 thousand 440 has been traded at the DSE in 5 working days of the outgoing week which is Taka 882 crore 54 lakh 65 thousand 613 or 26.28 percent more than the previous week. In the previous week, the transaction was Taka 3 thousand 358 crore 24 lakh 55 thousand 827.

DSE's main index, the DSEX, went up by 41.74 points or 0.86 percent to 4,914.04 points during the week. Among other indices, the Shariah Index increased by 1.20 points or 0.11 percent and the DSE-30 Index increased by 21.98 points or 1.32 percent to 1,114.17 points and 1,692.44 points respectively.

In the outgoing week, a total of 359 companies participated in the share and unit transactions at the DSE. Among the companies, share prices of 125 companies increased and 183 companies decreased. However, Share prices of 51 companies remained unchanged. 

During the outgoing week, amount of transaction at the CSE was Taka 116 crore 12 lakh 87 thousand 101. In the previous week, the transaction was Taka 114 crore 90 lakh 90 thousand 926. In other words, the turnover at the CSE during the week increased by Taka 1 crore 21 lakh 96 thousand 175 or 1.06 percent.

During the week, the overall CSE index CASPI went up by 146.26 points or 1.05 percent to 14,029.68 points. Shares and units of 310 companies were traded at the CSE during the week. Share prices of 110 companies increased and 154 companies decreased. Share prices of 46 companies remained the same.
