Joe Biden elected 46th president of the United States

Joe Biden has won the race to become the next US president, defeating Donald Trump following a cliff-hanger vote count after Tuesday's election.

The Associated Press projects that Biden has won the key battleground of Pennsylvania, as well as Arizona, propelling him to 284 electoral college votes, well above the 270 threshold required to clinch the White House.

The result makes Trump the first one-term president since George H.W. Bush (1988-1992). However, the Trump campaign has indicated their candidate does not plan to concede.

The AP projection of Biden's victory is based on the unofficial results from states that have already finished counting their votes, and the expected results from states like Wisconsin where the count is continuing.

The election saw the highest turnout since 1900. Biden has won more than 74 million votes so far, the most ever for a US presidential candidate. Even Trump’s tally of over 70 million is only topped by Biden.
