'Country's foreign reserve record high amid pandemic'

Lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches today said the country’s foreign reserve is now record-high compare to any time in the past amid Covid-19 situation.

“Country’s foreign reserve is record high compared to that during any other governments in the past since independence though the country is fighting against the deadly coronavirus pandemic,” said State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed while taking part in the general discussion on a thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech in the House.

Regarding the housing for the poor, the state minister said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken the initiative to provide houses to the poor people throughout the country.

“Already more than 70,000 poor people have been rehabilitated in their own houses constructed and financed by the government,” said state minister for industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder in his speech.

Hailing the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister during the pandemic, Jaitya Party lawmaker Kazi Feroz Rashid said the 31-points directives along with the stimulus packages have paved the way to keep the economy dynamic.

“When the economic activities throughout the world suffered a blow in the Covid-19 situation, the Prime Minister’s directives and time-befitting initiatives helped us revive the economy of the country,” he added.

“Even the country’s foreign reserve has crossed 43 billion US$ which is a record high in the history of the economy of the country after the independence,” said the lawmaker.

Taking part in the discussion, treasury bench lawmaker Shahjahan Kamal said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a number of mega projects aiming to build a developed country by 2041.

The lawmakers thanked President Abdul Hamid for elaborating the development and progress of the country which have taken place during the tenure of the present government.

The lawmakers highlighted the successes of the present government in different vital sectors like education, power, agriculture, health, infrastructure development, economy and food production.

Treasury bench lawmaker Dipankar Taluker also took part in the discussion.

The lawmakers also thanked the President for giving a timely speech highlighting the success stories of the government and guiding the nation towards peace, progress and prosperity.

Earlier, they paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his contribution to establishing an independent Bangladesh.
