Indian state of West Bengal on Friday registered its first death from mucormycosis, a fungal infection, as the country declared the disease an epidemic, reports PTI.
The victim, a 32-year-old woman passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata on Friday, said a Health Department official on Saturday.
Shampa Chakraborty, a resident of Haridevpur of Kolkata, was admitted to the state-run Sambhunath Pandit Hospital with Covid-19 where she breathed her last on Friday morning.
At present, five patients are undergoing treatment for the disease in the state, the official said.
