Global Covid deaths hit 3.46m with 167m infections

More than 167 million people have been found infected with Covid-19 until Monday as the world continues to grapple with the deadly virus.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total caseload reached 167,177,203 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 3,463,813.

The US has logged 33,117,656 cases with 589,893 fatalities as of Monday morning.

India crossed another grim milestone on Monday of more than 300,000 people lost to the coronavirus as a devastating surge of new infections that exploded with fury has shown signs of easing, reports AP.

The milestone, as recorded by India’s health ministry, comes as slowed vaccine deliveries have marred the country’s fight against the pandemic, forcing many to miss their shots, and a rare but fatal fungal infection affecting Covid-19 patients has worried doctors.

India’s death toll is the third-highest reported in the world, accounting for 8.6% of the nearly 34.7 million coronavirus fatalities globally, though the true numbers are thought to be significantly greater.

The health ministry Monday reported 4,454 new death in the last 24 hours, bringing India’s total fatalities to 303,720. It also reported 222,315 new infections, which raised the overall total to nearly 27 million. Both are almost certainly undercounts.

Brazil reported on Sunday 860 more deaths from Covid-19, raising the national count to 449,068, the Ministry of Health said.

A total of 35,819 more infections were detected, raising the nationwide tally to 16,083,258, the ministry said.

Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest caseload, following the United States and India.

Situation in Bangladesh
As Bangladesh battles with the Covid-19 pandemic, its health authorities recorded 28 more deaths and 1,354 cases in 24 hours until Sunday morning.

The infection rate rose to 8.90 per cent from Saturday’s 8.41 per cent while the mortality rate stood at 1.57 per cent, said a handout issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The new cases of infections were recorded after testing 15,205 samples.

With the fresh deaths during the period, the coronavirus fatalities rose to 12,376 in the country.

The total caseload now stands at 7,89,080 with the new ones, the handout added.
