Planning Minister MA Mannan said on Friday that meeting the budget deficit for 2021-22 fiscal year would not be a problem for Bangladesh as the debt to GDP ratio is better and the global lenders are ready to provide funds.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday unveiled the proposed budget of Tk 6,03,681 crore for the fiscal year 2021-22 in parliament.

Addressing an online post-budget briefing, the planning minister said the deficit in the proposed budget was not very unexpected.

“As a developing country, there will be a budget deficit and I don’t see any problem in meeting it,” said Mannan.

“We have estimated the deficit from our previous experience and it will not be difficult to meet as the foreign lending market is in good shape. The lenders have informed it to us,” said the minister.

“The problems would be solved through proper planning and implementation. Our government is successfully implementing the budget in the last couple of years facing several kind of obstacles,” he said, adding that the government is confident about implementing the proposed budget.

There should be no problem in arranging funds to implement the budget, he added.

“We repaid our lenders timely. Our GDP and per capita income rate are too good. So, we are not afraid of implementing the budget,” the minister said.

The finance minister in his budget speech said that the overall budget deficit for the fiscal year would be Tk 2,14,681 crore, which is 6.2 per cent of the GDP.

This ratio was 6.1 per cent in the last fiscal.

Out of the total deficit, Tk 1,01,228 crore will be financed from external sources and Tk 1,13,453 crore will come from domestic sources.

Of the domestic sources, Tk 76,452 crore will be taken from the banking sector and Tk 37,001 crore from savings certificates and other non-bank sources, said the minister.
