Alongside maintaining excellence in social and environmental areas, the apparel industry in the country is increasingly focusing on product diversification and upscaling business capabilities, said BGMEA President Faruque Hassan.

He said this while speaking at the Showcase Bangladesh and Investment Summit-2021 as a guest of honour on December 23, according to a press release.

The Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and the Better Bangladesh Foundation organised the summit to promote trade and investment.

The BGMEA chief said, “Bangladesh has huge opportunity and we have prioritised a few areas to build capacity of the industry, particularly innovation, product and fibre diversification, and technology upgradation will be our focus in the coming years. Foreign investments would be a great way to address all these priority issues.”

Planning Minister MA Mannan attended the programme as the chief guest while BIDA Executive Chairman Md Sirazul Islam was present as the special guest.

Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Naoki Ito, Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of European Union Jeremy Opritesco, acting high commissioner of Australia to Bangladesh Nardia Simpson, and High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh Sudharshan Seneviratne attended the event as the guests of honour.

BBF Chairman Masud A Khan presided over the event.

In his address, the BGMEA president said, “For the transformation to a high-end industry, we do also need specialised investments at this moment, for example in product categories like shirting fabric, laces, hooks, etc.

“Challenges were, are and will be for Bangladesh but our hope is high that the country will be able to continue its indomitable march forward where the industrial sector will play the role of a key driver,” he added.
