5.7-magnitude earthquake jolts Afghan-Tajik border

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake occurred at 45 kilometres south-west of Ashkasham, Afghanistan at 0416GMT on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said, with no immediate reports of damage.

The epicentre of the strong quake was initially determined to be at 36.445 degrees north latitude and 71.1166 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 209.05 km, USGS added.

The tremors from the quake were also felt in Pakistan, Tajikistan, and India.

Citing India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS), news media Hindustan times reported that the tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Noida, and other areas in the country.

Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said that eyewitnesses reported jolts in Pakistan at 9:18am local time. It was based on automatic crowdsourced detection, and was not seismically verified, Hindustan Times added.
