The West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's close aide and The Trinamool Congress (TMC) Birbhum district President Anubrata Mondal has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a 2020 cattle smuggling case.

He was arrested from his residence in Birbhum district on Thursday, India Today reports.

On Thursday morning, the CBI showed up at his Bolpur residence in the Birbhum district. They were accompanied by a convoy of 30 cars. The CBI locked him in and questioned for more than one and a half hours before picking him up from Birbhum.

A massive crowd gathered outside his house as he was whisked away by the probe agency. He is likely to be produced at the Asansol court later in the day.

The central probe agency had summoned Mondal 10 times before picking him up, but he did not appear citing health issues.

He had earlier been questioned twice by the central agency as part of its investigation into the cattle smuggling case.

The arrest was carried out after Kolkata's SSKM Hospital said he did not require admission.
