Japan's daily Covid-19 infections hit a record of more than 1,10,000, Jiji news agency reported on Saturday.

Faced with a seventh Covid wave, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday urged the public to exercise maximum vigilance.

Earlier in June, Japan opened its doors to tourists for the first time after two years.

Foreign tourists visiting Japan will be required to wear masks, take out private medical insurance and be chaperoned throughout their stay, the government said on June 7, planning a gradual opening from two years of Covid-19 restrictions.

Japan welcomed a record 31.9 million foreign visitors in 2019 and had been on track to achieve its goal of 40 million in 2020 before the pandemic hit.
