Temporary relief for Nobel laureate Amartya Sen as Calcutta HC stays Visva-Bharati University’s eviction notice till the lower court passes an order on the matter. The matter is scheduled for a hearing in the lower court on May 10, reports India Today.
The university had earlier sent an eviction notice to Sen, asking him to vacate 13 decimals of land at his Santiniketan residence by May 6. The university had claimed that the land was illegally occupied by Sen and he would be evicted if he failed to comply with the deadline.
Sen had moved to the Suri district court over the matter and the hearing was scheduled for May 15.
The university had accused Sen of being in possession of 1.38 acres of land on the Santiniketan campus, which is more than his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres. Sen had appealed against the notice in the Calcutta High Court.
The eviction notice from Visva-Bharati University came after a court in Bolpur, on April 13, permitted the imposition of Section 145 on the ‘disputed’ land, taking cognizance of police reports claiming a potential escalation of rift leading to a possible breach of peace.
Sen has been the holder of the land after the death of his parents, Ashutosh Sen and Amita Sen. Currently in the US, he is expected to return to Shantiniketan in June.
