Drones are being used to carry out flood mapping and provide essentials in Silchar, Assam's second-largest city, in a game-changing use of technology that is making its mark in relief operations.
Two drones were deployed in Silchar for carrying water and other relief materials to the inaccessible areas where the flood situation remains grim, reports NDTV.
Large parts of Silchar have been under 5-8 feet of water since Monday following the overflowing of the Barak River and a man-made breach on the Betukhandi embankment on Sunday, which led to large-scale flooding, reports Hindustan Times.
According to state government officials, over 2.5 million people in 27 districts were affected till Saturday by the present spate of flooding, which started on June 13. Four more people including 2 children died after drowning on Saturday.

Floods and landslides have claimed around 120 lives in Assam this year.
According to the district disaster management authority officials, over 2,80,000 people in Cachar, including nearly 73,000 children, are still affected by floods.
