Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took time off to visit a kitchen market in Chennai on Saturday and bought vegetables.
Sitharaman, who was on a day-long visit to Chennai, made a halt at the Mylapore market where she interacted with vendors and local residents as well, reports Business Today.
The minister purchased vegetables and greens before she left for New Delhi.
The office of the finance minister put out a video in which she can be seen picking vegetables from the market while locals came to greet her.
Sitharaman had a brief chat with vegetable vendors and locals, who appeared happy to see her in the market.
Meanwhile, her visit to a local market has gone viral on social media, with some praising her for her simplicity while others saying she might now realise the inflation that is hurting the common people.
BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, who accompanied the finance minister, said Sitharaman first stopped to buy ‘thandu keerai’ but as it was not available, she bought other greens instead, reports The Hindu.
“Initially the vendors were afraid of looking at the gun-toting security personnel. But then when we explained who she was, the women overcame their scare and even invited her for a cup of coffee in a nearby hotel. But she could spend only 20 minutes there since she had to catch a flight back home,” Vanathi added.
