Suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma cannot be arrested in the cases filed against her for her comments on Prophet Muhammad, the Indian Supreme Court said on Tuesday.

The court has asked various states to respond to her request to club multiple FIRs against her, Indian media NDTV reports.

The SC will take up Nupur Sharma's request to club all nine FIRs against her on August 10.

The court also protected her from coercive action in any future FIRs which may be registered in connection with the Prophet remarks.

Delhi, Maharashtra, Telengana, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Assam are the states that have been asked to reply to her request.

Nupur Sharma's lawyer told the Supreme Court that she was facing increasing threats to her life and so had been unable to seek any other legal recourse.

The report also mentioned that on July 1, the same bench of the top court had severely criticised Sharma for her controversial comments against the Prophet, saying her "loose tongue" had "set the entire country on fire" and that she is "single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country".

Following the scathing criticism, Sharma had withdrawn her plea to club all the FIRs. She has now asked for the comments made by the bench to be expunged.

Sharma's comments had created an uproar within the country with massive rallies taken out by Muslim groups, besides causing a diplomatic fallout with several Gulf nations registering their official protest. Soon after, she was suspended from the BJP.
