At least six people, including two doctors, died of suffocation after a massive fire broke out at Hazra Hospital in Purana Bazar in Jharkhand's Dhanbad on Friday night.
The deceased have been identified as Dr Vikas Hazra and his wife Dr Prema Hazra and other employees of the hospital, reports India Today.
The fire reportedly erupted on the second floor of the hospital due to a short circuit. Gradually, it spread and engulfed the first floor where people who were sleeping could not get a chance to save themselves.
With no arrangements to douse the blaze, the room soon filled with smoke due to which six people, including the doctor couple, died of suffocation.
Two fire engines reached and rescued a total of nine people from the spot, according to the report.
All of them have been admitted to the nearby Pataliputra nursing home where they are undergoing treatment.
Fire department personnel said there was no special security arrangement to prevent the fire in the hospital. Even the anti-fire machine was not active, highlighting negligence in security.
