The Indian government was forced to act promptly after an aerial video showing multiple giant craters on the Bihar highway went viral on social media.
In a tweet, the government said that the repairing work on the respective highway, National Highway 227, will be done by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) after the state govt hands over the project to the centre.
The road had been in dire strait since 2015. Since then, multiple tenders have been floated, but the contractors, who were assigned with the work left the work unfinished, reports Indian media Financial Express.
The alarming condition of the highway caught the attention of many after journalist Praveen Thakur of local daily Dainik Bhaskar posted the pictures of giant craters on his Twitter account.
Political strategist and a firm critic of Bihar's chief minister, Prashant Kishore in a tweet said that the condition of the roads in Bihar is similar to that of the Jungle Raj during the 1990s.
Two weeks ago, Union Minister for Road Transport and Infrastructure, Nitin Gadkari had said that the state’s road infrastructure would be on par with that of the US by December 2024 while speaking at an event in Bihar’s Hajipur.
Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the opposition in Bihar slammed the state government over the highway filled with potholes.
