Hundreds of supporters of the opposition National Peoples’ Power party on Sunday began a three-day 35-mile march from the southern city of Beruwala to Sri Lanka’s commercial capital Colombo.

The protesters are angry at the government's handling of a devastating economic crisis and demonstrations have raged for weeks over prolonged power cuts and shortage of fuel and medicine.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said the current crisis is the biggest challenge the country has faced in recent years.

Leader of the National People's Force, Anura Dissanayake, said, "What we have to do is to go beyond the protests and form a government that will develop the country's economy, maintain the supremacy of the law.

Earlier this week, Sri Lanka said it would suspend repayment of external debts ahead of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a loan program, instead using its meagre foreign reserves to provide essentials to its 22 million people.
