The US Embassy in Ukraine has said that it will not be able to evacuate American citizens as amid the ongoing Russian military operation in the country.

In a new security alert issued on Thursday, the US Embassy in Kyiv said the Department of State had shut down consular operations in the country.

“On February 24, 2022, the Department of State suspended consular operations in Lviv, Ukraine, following the suspension of consular services at the US Embassy in Kyiv on February 12, 2022.  US citizens seeking emergency assistance and those who decide to remain in Ukraine should complete this online form and the State Department will respond.  The US government will not be able to evacuate US citizens from Ukraine,” it said in a message published on the embassy’s website.

It also asked US citizens seeking consular services, including requests for repatriation loans, passport and visa services, to contact US embassies in neighbouring countries, such as Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

Since January 24, 2022, the United States has been urging American citizens to leave Ukraine immediately, due to the threat of Russian military action.

In the events of bombing, US citizens were advised to take shelter in place or seek cover outdoors when loud explosions or sirens are heard, and to stay away from debris after an attack.

They were also told to monitor major news outlets for updates.
