West Bengal schools will resume for classes 8 to 12 from February 3 as the Covid-19 pandemic situation has improved in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.
She came up with the announcement while addressing a press conference on Monday, reports Indian media NDTV.
Colleges and universities will also recommence their offline classes from Thursday, the chief minister added.
"We will decide on reopening primary schools later," she said.
Mamata said the Covid-19 situation in the state has improved a lot, which is why certain restrictions are being relaxed.
Meanwhile, schools and colleges across India will reopen from February 1.
Schools in Karnataka and Tripura were reopened from January 31, while schools will resume physical classes from February 1 in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana and Telangana.
Schools and colleges in West Bengal have largely remained shut since March 16, 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
Institutes in the state had briefly opened in November last year, only to close down again as number of infections had started soaring across the state.
