Trade bodies celebrate Padma Bridge opening in Ctg

Various organisations, including trade bodies, in Chattogram arranged a range of programmes to celebrate the official inauguration of the Padma Bridge on Saturday.

The Chattogram chapter of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) arranged an event at its auditorium where many dignitaries from the apparel and other sectors were present.

Speaking on the occasion, BGMEA Senior Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam said trade via the Mongla and Payra ports would increase with the opening of the bridge, which would reduce pressure on the Chattogram port.

Noting that the southern region would now attract more investment, he said the country’s growth would reach new heights through balanced development.

It was possible to build the bridge because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s determination, he added.

A cultural programme and a special banquet were organised on the occasion.

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) also held a big event at a community centre where a cultural event and a feast were organised.

CCC Mayor Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, “By building the Padma Bridge, we have been able to stand with our head held high in the international arena.”

The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a

milad mahfil. The district administration organised a special event and a concert at the MA Aziz Stadium in the afternoon.

A 100ft replica of the Padma Bridge, set up by a local ward councillor and a housing company in Jamal Khan, caught the attention of people from different walks of life.
