Chattogram depot fire: Death toll rises to 47 as another victim dies

The death toll from BM Container Depot fire rose to 47 as another victim died at a private hospital in Chattogram on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Kader, 22, a staff of the depot of Bashkhali upazila.

Nurul had been undergoing treatmcent at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Parkview Hospital since June 4 where he succumbed to his injuries around 2:00pm, said Deputy General Manager of the hospital Humayun Kabir.

Earlier in the day, fireman Gausul Azam, who sustained burn injuries in the fire incident, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Fireman Gausul Azam was brought to Dhaka with severe burn injuries and admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of DMCH where he breathed his last around 3 am, said Md Shahjahan Sikder, duty officer of fire service and civil defence headquarters media cell.

So far, 10 firefighters have died in the incident. It is said to be the ‘largest death figure’ the fire service has seen in a single incident.

On June 4, a fire and subsequent blasts at BM Container Depot at Sitakunda of Chattogram left over 200 people injured.
